Interview with Channing Cooper

Congratulations on winning the Outstanding Athletic Performance Award at the Eeyou Istchee Summer Games, Channing! How does it feel to be recognized for your efforts?

Thank you so much! Honestly, it feels incredible. Winning this award is a huge honour, not just for me but for my family and community back in Waswanipi. It’s proof that all the hours of training and preparation were worth it.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey leading up to the Games? What inspired you to compete?

Sure! I’ve been passionate about sports for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Waswanipi, I played everything I could—basketball, volleyball, track and field—you name it. But hockey has always been my favourite. I started skating when I was about five years old, and ever since, I’ve spent most of my winters on the ice.

In the summer, I focus on sports like track and field and basketball. Competing at the Eeyou Istchee Summer Games was something I always dreamed of, especially after watching older athletes from my community do so well in past years. They inspired me to push myself, and I wanted to show the younger kids in Waswanipi that they could do it too.

What events did you compete in, and what were the highlights for you?

I competed in track and field events, basketball, and volleyball. The highlight for me was the 200-metre sprint. I trained hard for it, and when I crossed the finish line first, I felt so proud. But honestly, playing basketball with my team was just as special. There’s something about working together and feeling that connection with your teammates that makes it unforgettable.

It sounds like you’re a multi-talented athlete. How do you balance training for so many different sports?

It can be a challenge, but I like staying busy. During hockey season, I focus more on skating and endurance training. In the off-season, I switch gears and work on speed, agility, and strength for track and court sports. My coaches have been amazing in helping me plan my training, so I don’t burn out or get injured. Time management is key—I still have school and other responsibilities to balance, but staying active actually helps me stay focused.

Winning an award like this shows you’ve got both skill and dedication. What advice would you give to other young athletes in Eeyou Istchee?

My advice would be to set goals and stay committed to them. It’s okay to have setbacks—everyone does—but don’t let them stop you. Remember why you started and keep pushing forward. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’ve learned so much from my coaches, family, and even my teammates. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and believe in yourself too.

What’s next for you? Do you have any big goals or competitions on the horizon?Right now,

I’m gearing up for the winter hockey season. My goal is to make the regional team this year and eventually play at a higher level. I also want to keep training for track and field and maybe qualify for a provincial competition. Long term, I’d love to coach or mentor younger athletes in Waswanipi and help them reach their potential.

That’s an incredible goal! Before we wrap up, is there anyone you’d like to thank for supporting you on your journey?

Definitely! First, I want to thank my family—they’ve been there for me every step of the way, whether it’s driving me to practices or cheering for me at games. I also want to thank my coaches for pushing me and believing in me. And, of course, the community of Waswanipi. Their support and encouragement mean so much. I hope I’ve made them proud.

Thank you, Channing, and congratulations again on your well-deserved award. We’re all excited to see what’s next for you!Thank you! I’m excited too.
